The Prison Service of the Czech Republic is responsible for the comprehensive administration of the prison system in the Czech Republic. It manages and secures 33 prisons across the country and employs more than 10,000 uniformed officers and civilian staff. Nearly 19,000 inmates are held behind prison walls.Among the Czech Republic's law enforcement agencies, the Prison Service is unique in the breadth of its responsibilities. Within prisons, its staff performs a wide range of duties, including guarding prisons and other judicial facilities, escorting inmates, providing specialized and therapeutic treatment to inmates and overseeing inmate employment. They also handle the daily preparation of thousands of meals, maintenance and repairs, administrative tasks, and laundry services. The statutory responsibilities of the Czech Prison Service include, among others:
